Fitness - Graduate Assistant

Position Description

The Fitness Program provides a comprehensive schedule of group fitness and cycling classes and Personal Training for students, faculty/staff, and community members. Participants have the opportunity to experience more than 50 different classes weekly taught by a team of student instructors who are nationally certified, highly trained fitness professionals. The energy-packed, diverse group fitness program provides members the opportunity to achieve their fitness goals. The Personal Training program is in its early stages in collaboration with the School of Kinesiology & Recreation (KNR). Responsibilities

The Graduate Assistant will assist the Coordinator of Fitness in coordinating, programming, and scheduling of the Group Fitness and Personal Training staff. Other duties include: hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate instructors and personal trainers; assist in teaching the Fitness Instructor Training course; assist in conducting monthly staff meetings and staff development; maintain equipment and assess equipment needs; inventory control of equipment and music; plan and evaluate program publicity; perform routine maintenance on cycles; update and implement instructor training and staff manuals; perform on-site supervision for facility operations; and assist with continued development of the Personal Training program. Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary by the department.

Qualifications

All applicants must qualify for admission to the Illinois State University Graduate School. A Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation Administration, Exercise Science or related field is preferred. Experience in group fitness instruction and personal training highly recommended. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Supervisory experience and organizational skills are beneficial. Applicants with a National Fitness Certification (AFAA, ACE, ACSM) preferred.

Contract Dates

August 1, 2007 to May 15, 2008. Two-year assistantship available, pending satisfactory performance. Summer employment is available.

Stipend

895/month for 9 ½ months, plus in-state and out-of-state tuition waiver.
