Coordinator – Outdoor Program

 

Responsibilities:
The Coordinator will provide professional management, supervision and program development for the Department of Recreation Services.  The Coordinator will assist in the development of policies and procedures and the administration of a comprehensive outdoor recreation program and experiential learning program.  The Coordinator is responsible for assisting with daily and long-term management, planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of Adventure Trips and non-credit instruction classes.  Planning, programming, and administering the Outdoor Adventure Program, Challenge Course, Rappelling Tower, and Indoor Rock Climbing Facility.  The Coordinator will also assist in overseeing the operation of the Outdoor Adventure Rental Center, address the continual development of the Outdoor Resource Library, and assist in the facility management of the new Student Fitness Center.  Assists in designing, organizing and instructing outdoor classes and other leisure activities of the "Leisure U" Program (non-credit classes).  Selects, trains, and supervises a staff, which includes support staff, graduate assistants, student employees, interns and volunteers.  Promotes outdoor recreation, education, environmental awareness, leadership, and team building in line with "Educating Illinois," a university initiative.  Develops, manages, and evaluates program budget.

Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree required.  Two (2) years of graduate school or full-time professional experience required. Experience administering and/or working in an outdoor program.  Experience working with a diverse student population in a university environment or related experience.  Advance knowledge, experience and skill in the following: camping, climbing, gym climbing, caving, bouldering, canoeing, rafting, kayaking, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing.  Familiarity of inspecting a low ropes challenge course and indoor gym rock climbing facility.  Availability to work flexible shifts, evenings and weekends depending on activities being offered.  Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing.  Valid Driver's License and/or ability to obtain a valid Driver's License.   Must be currently active in one or more of the following professional organizations: AORE, NOLS, NIRSA, etc.

Additionally, desired qualifications include a Master’s degree; NIRSA (CRSS), CPR, First Aid, WFR (Wilderness First Responder), ACA Kayak/Canoe Instructor certifications; Ability to teach outdoor skills, kayaking, rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking, etc.; Familiarity with a broad range of outdoor equipment and the ability to maintain this equipment including procurement and rental operations; Familiarity with experiential learning as it relates to managing and facilitating a low ropes challenge course;  Involvement in broad range of outdoor trips and familiarity with liability issues related to outdoor recreation; Experience in the supervison of student employees and volunteers; Computer software experience with Word and Excel.

Salary:
$32,000-$36,000 per year.
Twelve-month, full-time position.

Proposed Starting Date
November 1, 2007.  The starting date is negotiable.
