Student Employee Position Descriptions

These descriptions should give you an idea of the duties you would be performing as part of the Department of Recreation Services. All positions include cleaning responsibilities, scheduled staff meetings, and other task requirements not necessarily listed. Please note that, due to the training necessary for many of our positions, preference will be given to students offering at least a two-semester employment commitment, unless otherwise noted.

NOTE: Not all of the positions listed below are available at every hiring session, therefore, be sure to check the online job postings for current openings.

Assistant Facilitator - Challenge Course

Responsibilities Include:

Assist with facilitation and processing of a group for a Course.

Desired Qualifications:

Enthusiastic and friendly, ability to show good judgement, provide direction and encouragement, current CPR/AED/First Aid certification

Starting Wage:

$15.00/hr.

Hours Per Week:

4 or 7 hrs/event

Varies depending on event schedule

Fitness Instructor

Responsibilities Include:

The Fitness Instructor is responsible for the safe and effective instruction of group exercise classes to participants with varying fitness levels.

Required Qualifications:

Ability to complete the ACE (American Council on Exercise) or AFAA (Aerobics & Fitness Association of America) professional certification to have national credibility within 6 months of hire.

Top-notch individuals that we can train to join our excellent staff of group fitness instructors, enthusiastic and friendly, dedicated and honest, comfortable working as a team

New instructors are required to complete the Fitness Instructor Training Course at no cost. The training course includes an assistant program, where you will be paired with a veteran instructor in order to get hands-on-experience.

Starting Wage:

$8.00/hr

Hours Per Week:

Minimum teaching 2-4 classes

per week

Graphic Designer

Responsibilities Include:

Graphic Designer will use your graphic design and marketing skills to create and produce fliers, posters, and other materials for the use of the department.

Required Qualifications:

Proficient in Indesign, Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator, and Acrobat

Desired Qualifications:

Experience with Dreamweaver, Flash, Contribute helpful; creative; able to work well with others; have good communication and listening skills

Starting Wage:

$8.50/hr.

Lead Facilitator - Challenge Course

Responsibilities Include:

Facilitate and process a group for a Course. Applies a sequential process that matches challenge levels to the readiness and skill level of the group as well as their goals and needs.

Responsibilities Include:

Lifeguard and facility duties as needed at McCormick. Open and close pool. May assist with special events.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsible for officiating, as well as possible scorekeeping and on-site supervision of intramural activities.

Outdoor Adventure Volunteer Trip Coordinator

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include planning all aspects of one or more Outdoor Adventure Trips each year. Money management, equipment maintenance, problem solving, detailed record keeping, risk management procedures, and equipment cleaning responsibilities are all required aspects of coordinating a trip. Coordinators are responsible for assisting with advertising of trips, meeting with coordinator supervisor, and holding a pre-trip meeting before the trip takes place. During the adventure trip, coordinators are held responsible for ensuring the safety and accountability of all participants and university resources.

Required Qualifications:

Valid driver's license in good standing before driving a university vehicle in the course of their job duties. Coordinators must successfully complete all required training and coordinator tests, as well as complete annual re-assessment to be eligible to continue in the volunteer position. training will be provided.

Desired Qualifications:

Outgoing, adventurous, leadership oriented, have passion for the outdoors, dedicated and honest, comfortable working as part of a team

Starting Wage:

VOLUNTEER. Benefits include free trainings, free skills workshops, and free trips.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Attend the Outdoor Adventure Program's Recruitment Session on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 8:00pm held at the Outdoor Adventure Rental Center. Attendance is NOT required at the Rec Services Student Employment Recruitment Sessions since this is a volunteer position.

2. Call 309-438-8415 to RSVP for an Outdoor Adventure Program Recruitment Session.

3. Monthly meetings are the first Wednesday of every month at 9:00pm at the Outdoor Adventure Rental Center. You are welcome to begin attending at any point.

Personal Trainer

Responsibilities Include:

The Personal Trainer is responsible for prescribing safe and effective exercise routines for a diverse client population.

Desired Qualifications:

National Personal Trainer Certification (AFAA, ACE, NSCA, other), CPR/AED, enthusiastic and friendly, dedicated and honest

Starting Wage:

$9.00/hr (non-certified), $15.00/hr (certified)

Rec Assistant

Responsibilities Include:

Rec Assistants may be assigned to work at the Student Rec Building or the Outdoor Adventure Rental Center. Depending on where the Rec Assistant is assigned, may assist with sales and locker/towel/equipment rentals; checking outdoor equipment in and out; answering and transferring phones; registering participants for programs; verifying guest registration and identification; providing customer assistance; and handling cash transactions. Daily duties may include monitoring guest workouts; cleaning, inspecting and upkeep of equipment; demonstrating use of equipment to guests; providing inventory counts; performing cash transactions; and interacting with the public utilizing quality customer service.  

Desired Qualifications:

Customer service focused, timely and responsible, enthusiastic and friendly, dedicated and honest, comfortable working as a team

Starting Wage:

$8.00/hr.

Sewing Specialist - Outdoor Adventure Rental Center

Responsibilities Include:

Repairs a variety of outdoor recreation rental equipment to include cleaning, repairing or replacing parts. Assist with customers if needed.

Desired Qualifications:

Enthusiastic and friendly, dedicated and honest, general knowledge of repair, knowledge of outdoor adventure equipment helpful, experience hand sewing, moderate knowledge of a sewing machine, knowledge of working with a variety of materials including fabrics and wood

Starting Wage:

$8.50/hr.

Minimum of 10 hours

Work Hours:

Various 3:00pm-7:00pm Sunday-Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm Saturday

Supervisor - Outdoor Adventure Program Trip Coordinators

Responsibilities Include:

Supervises 15-30 volunteer Trip Coordinators. The individual assembles trip packets, organizes the check-out of group trip equipment, and meets with trip coordinators prior to their pre-trip meetings. Assists the Coordinator-Outdoor Program with scheduling and organizing meetings and trainings, maintaining training records, and enforcing department policies. The trip coordinator supervisor also requires the skills to assist the Coordinator-Outdoor Program with scheduling, organizing, and evaluating a variety of outdoor recreational trips.

Desired Qualifications:

Enthusiastic and friendly, dedicated and honest, general knowledge of outdoor trip planning, knowledge of outdoor adventure equipment helpful.

Starting Wage:

$8.50/hr.

Hours Per Week:

Average of 8-15 hours per week

Work Hours:

Flexible hours. Evening meetings often until 11 pm are common. Must be available to meet with trip coordinators at regular times each week.

Supervisor - Student Employment and Leisure U

Responsibilities Include:

The Student Supervisor will assist the Coordinator-Best People Program with the selection and oversight of the Leadership Team and assist with Recruitment Sessions, Initial Interviews and Orientation for the three hiring periods during the academic year.  This position will also assist with the end of the year departmental recognition celebration.  In addition, this position will assist in the organization and promotion of non-credit classes in the Leisure University Program.

Desired Qualifications:

Enthusiastic and friendly, dedicated and honest, comfortable working as a team, an interest for a career in Human Resources or in a similar leadership/supervisory field, detail-oriented with good computer skills and extremely organized

Starting Wage:

$8.50/hr.
