Who is George Arndt?
George Arndt came to America from Germany shortly before the turn of the century. He settled in Chicago and, with the help of his family, opened a tavern. Located on the corner of Robery and Cornelia in an old German neighborhood (AKA Lakeview), George Arndt's was a popular place to socialize. After many prosperous years, the federal prohibition act of 1920 threatened the end of George Arndt's livelihood. Should he shut down or do business outside the law, trafficking with rum runners and the likes of Al Capone? His wife, the lovely Eleanore, had an idea. Why not stay in the tavern business, remain in the neighborhood social center and serve non-alcoholic refreshments? The lovely Eleanore was as clever as she was lovely. George Arndt thought the idea was risky; however, operating a speakeasy and disappointing his lovely wife were equally vexing alternatives. Henceforth, George Arndt's Juice Bar was born.
It was a trying new beginning for the man who previously enjoyed an occasional "shooter" of whiskey at the special table reserved for the tavern owner and the most regular of the regulars. Standing tall in a perfectly starched and ironed white shirt--with cigar in hand--George Arndt welcomed his guests to enjoy his now dry menu of natural juices, mineral waters, ciders and seltzers while business grew to beyond his greatest dreams.
